SEVEN STUDENTS AWARDED UK SCHOLARSHIPS

Seven students have been awarded Scholarships this year to study at UK colleges and universities – with one student being nominated for and awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship.

These students are Jordan Clingham (Computer Engineering Degree), James Cairns-Wicks (Civil Engineering Degree), Harley Williams (Environmental Science Degree), Louis Youde ( B.Tech Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering), Robyn Midwinter (Foundation in Veterinary Nursing), David Clarke (Mathematics Degree), and Kyle Shoesmith who has been awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to study Civil Engineering.

Director of Education, Shirley Wahler, said:

“We are delighted to announce that St Helena will be sending its largest ever contingent of Scholarship students abroad this year.  Each of these young people has already made great strides towards their goals and we wish them every success in their UK studies.”

Distance Learning Co-Ordinator, Pamela Lawrence, added:

This is a mixed group of students – each is following his or her individual aspirations and a desire to continue to develop themselves. Life at university and their experiences in the outside world – added to what they have already gained in the ‘world of work’ here on the Island – will, we hope, add to the expertise and leadership qualities they can eventually bring back to the Island in the not too distant future.

“I wish them all every success and would like to thank all those who have given support and encouragement to these seven students along the way – not least their parents, teachers, and personnel in various public and private sector workplaces whose support cannot be underestimated.”

The students are all scheduled to leave St Helena on Saturday 27 August 2016, arriving in the UK on Wednesday 31 August.

Arrangements for their arrival in the UK, including induction with SHG UK Representative Mrs Kedell Worboys MBE, are underway.  Kedell will also meet the students prior to them leaving the Island when she visits St Helena later this month.
