REQUEST FOR SUPPORT – 2016 CENSUS

On Sunday 7 February 2016 St Helena will be conducting a Population & Housing Census.  The Census is a complete count of all houses on the Island and all the people who are staying in them on Census night. The Census involves completing a questionnaire for each house on the Island – the householder (ie. the person responsible, or jointly responsible, for paying the bills) will be required to ensure that the questionnaire is completed and returned.

Everyone on St Helena is required by law to take part in the Census and the Statistics Office will be relying on your support and co-operation.  The information gathered is needed to inform the future development of St Helena Island and her people.

The Statistics Office is recruiting a number of temporary positions, as outlined below, to help with delivery of the Census.  Those who have already agreed to act as Census Enumerators do not need to register their interest again.

Enumerators

SHG’s Statistics Office is looking for additional individuals to join the Census team as Enumerators – particularly to cover the Blue Hill, St Pauls and Sandy Bay areas -working between Saturday 30 January to Sunday 14 February 2016.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering the Census questionnaire to houses in an agreed area
  • Identifying and logging unoccupied dwellings
  • Providing support in completing the questionnaire if the householder needs it
  • Collecting the completed forms

Logistics Co-ordinator

The Census team is also looking for a computer literate and motivated person to join the Census for up to six weeks during the busiest period of operations, preferably starting from Monday 18 January 2016.

Duties include:

  • Managing delivery of the electronic Census
  • Providing telephone support for Census queries
  • Co-ordinating the initial stages of data entry
  • Other office tasks as required during an extremely busy period of Census operations

A flexible and positive attitude and a willingness to work some weekends and evenings are essential, as are the ability to demonstrate expert computing skills and the ability to get to grips with new systems.

Data Entry Clerks

Once the Census data has been collected, the data entry team will ensure that it is entered quickly and accurately into an electronic database.  Data entry clerks will be employed on a temporary basis to complete this task.

Accurate data entry, a calm and methodical approach to repetitive work and the ability to understand and assign statistical codes where necessary is needed.

If you are interested in finding out more about this work please contact the Statistics Office (details below) to register your interest. This work will not start until after the Census operational period and the duration of the work is uncertain at this time (estimated at 6 weeks in the first instance).

If you are interested in having a role in this important exercise, please contact any member of the Statistics team for an informal chat.  The Statistics team can be contacted on email statistics@sainthelena.gov.sh, telephone 22138, or those interested can pop into the Castle. Please note that the Statistics Office has now moved one floor up in the Castle – directly above their old office.

Those interested in Enumerator positions, please contact the office no later than Monday 11 January 2016.
