R V BUCKLEY – MESSAGE FROM ST HELENA POLICE

On Monday, 17 September, Mr Buckley was convicted of a serious criminal offence. Other matters were found not proven. He was sentenced on Friday, 21 September, to 16 weeks imprisonment.

The St Helena Police would like to thank the complainants and witnesses in the case of R v Cruyff Buckley for having the courage to come forward and give evidence.

The St Helena Police Service will always investigate any reports of domestic abuse seriously and encourage any victim, male or female, to come forward and make a report. Domestic abuse will not be tolerated on St Helena.

DCI Michael Luke, Head of Investigations, said:

“It takes immense courage for victims of domestic violence to report matters to the Police in the first instance.

“Working with our partners, we constantly look to encourage and support victims to report any incidents of domestic abuse as it is vitally important that they are listened to and believed. Domestic abuse, in any form, is not acceptable in modern society.

“It is right that the case against Cruyff Buckley was heard in the courts where there is a high burden of proof. Mr Buckley was found guilty of a serious criminal offence, namely being in possession of a prohibited weapon, namely a stun gun.

“Mr Buckley was sentenced on the basis that he retuned back to the domestic setting of the family home with the stun gun where two children were present, the youngest being ten years old.

“This was the scene of an earlier incident. Mr Buckley was acquitted of all offences arising out of that earlier incident.

“Our message to victims of domestic abuse remains clear that the St Helena Police Directorate takes any report very seriously and will take positive action when cases are reported. I would urge anyone who has experienced any form of domestic abuse to come forward and report it to us.”
