The Public Works and Services Department

The Public Works and Services Department provides various services to members of the public associated with the Islands’ infrastructure. This includes the provision of water and energy, building works and maintenance of all government buildings and also the upkeep of all Government roads. The department is also responsible for St Helena Government’s vehicle fleet and has its own Technical Services section. Public Works and Services is one of the St Helena Government’s largest departments and their range of services are as follows:

 

Drainage

Management and maintenance of the sewer network

 

Roads

Management and maintenance of the roads network

Maintenance of highway, district and community roads

 

Building and Maintenance

Maintenance of Government buildings (except agricultural buildings) 

Inspection of hillsides over Jamestown and Ruperts

 

Technical Services

Carrying out assessments and providing estimates for new St Helena Government projects

Providing the St Helena Government with necessary designs, surveys and costing

Working with the private sector on relevant projects

 

Street/Security Lighting

Provision of street lights and security lights

 

Electricity

Maintaining the power station

Maintaining and upgrading the electrical network 

Looking at more efficient methods of energy production and distribution including renewable energy

 

Water

Developing improved access to water resources

Managing and maintaining the existing infrastructure for water

Monitoring of water quality

 

Unallocated Stores

Ordering and issuing of stores for Government Departments

Sale of goods to the public (when these are unavailable elsewhere on the Island)

 

Transport

Maintaining and repairing Government vehicles
