The Education Department

This department aims to continue raising the standard of education for the people of St Helena. This is achieved through primary and secondary school programmes and an adult and vocational education service, which promotes life long learning. Primary and Secondary sectors work to the UK National Curriculum which is adapted for local use. St Helena has three primary schools, one secondary school and an adult and vocational education centre. Following a recent restructuring process and the introduction of vertical grouping, the number of primary schools on the island has reduced from six to three resulting in more efficient pupil to teacher ratios.

Key services include:

Provision of Primary Sector Education

Three schools catering for pupils aged from 4 to 11 years of age

Provision of Secondary Education

One Community High School, Prince Andrew School for all students 11 years of age and over

Teacher Training

Provision of a Public Library and Mobile Library service

Provision of Adult and Vocational Education Services (AVES)

Identify learning needs throughout the island

Strategically planning for work-based learning

Adult and community learning opportunities
