Press Release

4 March 2010

It is well known that from time to time oil escapes from the wreck of the ‘Darkdale’. This usually subsides quickly, and the oil disperses. Monitoring by the Directorate of Fisheries indicates that this may not be the case with the current oil leak.

SHG has been assessing the possible scale of the problem, as well as remedial measures, with the advice of Dr Alan Rowley, Laboratory Quality Manager and others.

Advice on ways to dispose of, or contain, the spillage is also being sought from relevant authorities in the UK.

As a precautionary measure, all persons are advised not to fish in James Bay, from the Wharf itself, or in the vicinity of the oil slick until further notice.

We will keep the public fully informed as further details become available.
