New Years Honours

12 January 2010

It gives me great pleasure to announce the award of an MBE to Mrs Kedell Worboys, in recognition of her ongoing services to St Helena and its people.

Kedell started working for SHG in July 1981 as a Trainee Clerk in the Audit Department. Then, in February 1987, she moved to the Treasury and by January of 1989 she had been promoted to Chief Clerk in the Development and Economic Planning Department. She was later promoted to Chief Development Officer where she played a pivotal role in securing funds for development aid funded projects.

Kedell also served as a Director of the St Helena Development Agency Board, and as the Government Representative on the Board of Directors for the St Helena Fisheries Corporation while working as Chief Development Officer.

After serving as Head of Department for eight years, Kedell resigned from the St Helena Government in June 1999 to take up residence in the UK and during the following year was appointed to her current position as St Helena Government UK Representative. We on St Helena continue to benefit from her knowledge and understanding of the Island and its people and from the network of influential friends and supporters she has built up for the Island. She is indeed, a true ambassador who works tirelessly for the Island and its people.

The job sees Kedell travelling in and out of the UK to represent the Island at various conferences and events where she lobbies for support for the Island. Kedell also plays a key role in promoting the Island as a tourism and investment destination despite our physical isolation. She is also heavily involved in international recruitment and selection of personnel for high level posts on the Island. In addition, she gives advice and assistance to prospective employees and visitors to the Island, and she supports St Helenians who travel to the UK for medical attention, official business and overseas training and development.
