Signing of Contract for Public Transport

The provision of public transport is to continue on St Helena.

A new contract valid until 31 March 2013 has been signed between the St Helena Government and various bus-service providers and depending on the outcome of a review in early 2013, there will be opportunity to extend the contract until 31 March 2015.

Under the new agreement, public transport will continue to be provided by Solomon’s, Fox Motors and Colin’s Garage.

Gillian Francis, Acting Chief Secretary, signed on behalf of the St Helena Government at the Castle, and the Government Economist, Paul Blessington, was also in attendance for the signing along with Enid Joshua, Finance Officer. Gillian said “The St Helena Government is pleased to be able to continue providing subsidy to the service providers. This will ensure that fares can remain the same at this stage.”

Under the new agreement, all of the existing routes will continue and in addition two new services will operate on a Saturday evening departing Jamestown for Longwood/Levelwood and Half Tree Hollow/White Wall. These new runs are expected to begin in November 2009 and will operate for three months on a trial basis in the first instance to determine whether the service will be utilised. More details of the new runs will be released soon.

Public Transport was first introduced to St Helena in 2003.
