General Election – Nomination of Candidates
The deadline for nominations to stand as councillor is fast approaching.
Returning Officer, Gillian Francis is today reminding people that the last opportunity to make a nomination will be on Wednesday 21 October at 12 noon. However, she is urging people to submit their nominations in advance of this deadline in case there are errors on the form. “If you get your forms in early, it will give you time to make any corrections before the deadline” said Gillian.
People can stand for election if they have had their 21st birthday and if they are on the 2009 Register of Electors. However, the Elections Law disallows certain people from standing for election and the list can be examined at the office of the Clerk of Councils in the Castle. Persons who are disallowed include public servants, unless they have obtained permission from the Governor, as well as magistrates and coroners unless they resign before noon on 21 October. Others who are disallowed include those people who are involved in organising the elections and those who are serving a sentence of imprisonment for 12 months or more. On 21 October, the Returning Officer will be announcing the names of all persons who have been validly nominated to stand for election.
