Proposed Terminal Handling Charges

17 September 2009

I am well aware of the considerable concern that has been raised over the pre-emptive announcement of the introduction of Terminal Handling Charges.

These Charges in St.Helena and Cape Town were discussed with the Board of the Saint Helena Line as far back as April, and it was agreed with them then that the need for this move would be fully explained and further thought through prior to its introduction.

As this idea has been actioned before normal processes have taken place, I have asked Saint Helena Line to withdraw the introduction of such charges until such time as the reasoning behind them has been fully discussed with Executive Council. I am glad to say that they have agreed to that request.

This delay will enable all of us to examine the economic impact of any increase and I welcome any representations on this issue prior to discussion with EXCO.
