Governor Gurr Announces Date for 2009 General Election

17 September 2009

St Helena is due to go to the polls on Wednesday 4 November 2009 to elect a new Legislative Council.

The date of the election was announced in a proclamation issued by Governor Andrew Gurr yesterday. This means that there is less than seven weeks before people go to vote.

Returning Officer, Gillian Francis, said that now is the time to think about possible candidates. St Helena needs 12 Councillors to serve the Island for the next four years and anyone can stand for Election providing they are on the 2009 Electoral Roll and providing they are over the age of 21 years.

Writs of Election will be issued shortly, and they will fix Wednesday 21 October as 'Nomination Day' - the latest date for the Returning Officer to receive the names of persons intending to stand for Election. Nomination Forms will be available from Tuesday 22nd September, from the Clerk of Councils at The Castle and from Assistant Registration Officers around the Island.

Further information will be made available over the coming weeks.
