Press Release

85 Applications to be Added to 2009 Register of Electors

The Registration Officer has received applications from 85 people to have their names added to the 2009 Register of Electors. In addition, the Attorney General has applied for the removal of a number of names of persons who are believed to have died or left the Island.

Gillian Francis, Registration Officer, said that the number of applications was pleasing since it represents a further strengthening of democracy on St Helena, with more people having the opportunity to vote this year.

There is provision for objecting to any of the new names which will be published tomorrow, in a Gazette Notice. Copies will be on notice boards around the Island and can be viewed at the office of the Regisration Officer in the Castle. Assistant Registration Officers will also be provided with a copy for people to inspect.

Objections must be addressed, in writing, to the Regisration Officer, and received at her office at The Castle by no later than 4pm on Tuesday, 22 September 2009. Thereafter, applicants will be informed in writing of the Regisration Officer's decision and will have the right to appeal to the Magistrates' Court if they are dissatisfied.
