NEW ADVANCED SKILLS TEACHER IN MATHS

A new Advanced Skills Teacher in Maths, Jacques Krige (photo attached), arrived on St Helena on Sunday, 9 July 2017, to undertake his role working within the Education Directorate. Jacques is on-Island for three years and is based at Prince Andrew School.

Jacques said:

“My role consists of teaching and developing mathematics on the Island. Students all over the world need to think big and expand their horizons and exceed all expectations we have for them.

“I hope to be a part of that journey for students on St Helena, giving them opportunities to shape and form their future, the Island’s development and the destiny of the world as one.”

Head Teacher of Prince Andrew School, Penny Bowers, said:

“We are very happy indeed to have our second Maths Teacher here with us. Jacques has a lot of experience and skills which we will endeavour to tap into.  We are now in a position where we can really look forward to the big picture and to developing a long term maths strategy for Prince Andrew School.

“There has been big changes in the UK recently within the maths curriculum, and working alongside our Advanced Skills Maths Teachers, our aim is to improve our attainment in this area overall.”

Jacques has been teaching for 20 years, having been inspired by the challenge of mathematics. He has taught in South Africa, the UK, Dubai and Qatar. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and a Higher Diploma in Education.

Before coming to St Helena, Jacques spent fourteen years employed in the Middle East by Qatar Petroleum Schools as Head of Department Mathematics and as part of the Senior Leadership Team, working on Student Tracking, Curriculum Development & Design.

Jacques concluded:

“What I enjoy most about teaching is the moment when a puzzle piece falls into place in a student’s head, there is a brightness that appears in their eyes when they succeed in mathematics and it’s priceless to behold.

“In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’. It is my privilege to be a part of that process.”
