INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2017

Today, Wednesday 8 March, is International Women’s Day (IWD) 2017.

Originally known as International Working Women’s Day, IWD is celebrated annually. In different regions the focus of the celebrations are respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements. This year the theme is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’.

On St Helena, the Equality & Human Rights Commission will be dedicating a week to the occasion, with talks by different women leaders of the Island being held every night in the Museum, until Friday 10 March.

Human Rights Officer, Lucia Plato, commented:

“The aim of this week is to show our appreciation for women, past and present, on St Helena. We’ve got photos on display in the Museum of women dating back to 1900, including nurses and teachers. We want to show that there are women with leading roles and that, as an Island, we should be proud. Hopefully, people will come down and actually learn something from the talks with different leaders this week.”

Her Excellency, Governor Lisa Phillips, commented:

“In many ways St Helena has a good story to tell on gender equality with encouraging progress to date. But there is more to do, especially to protect those less affluent and more vulnerable. I am proud of the women on St Helena and am personally committed to enhancing this role in whichever way I can.”
