HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURE SURVEY ENTERS FINAL PHASE

The fieldwork for the 2017 Household Expenditure Survey (HES) is, this week, entering its final phase.

The Statistics Office has been conducting the HES since mid-September, under the authority of the Statistics Ordinance, 2000.

The Statistics Office would like to extend their thanks to all of the 140 households that have taken part in the HES. Participants are kindly requested to complete remaining forms or diaries as soon as possible, and return to their enumerator or the Statistics Office at The Castle.

The primary purpose of this survey is to update the ‘shopping basket’ used to measure the impact of price inflation on households. From time to time, the composition of the basket needs to be reviewed through a survey, to make sure it represents the current average spending patterns of households and so that inflation can be measured as accurately as possible.

Over the next few weeks, the data collected will be checked and processed to produce statistics on household expenditure patterns, which will enable the recalibration of the ‘shopping basket’ used to calculate inflation rates and the Retail Price Index (RPI).

When all forms have been received, a raffle draw for all participants will be conducted with prizes kindly donated by local businesses – The Rose & Crown, Solomon & Company (St Helena) Plc , Thorpe’s & Sons, the Queen Mary Store, Joshua Brothers Covered Production, Essence Beauty Salon and G-Unique Designs.
