HM Customs & Excise continued its modernisation programme by conducting management training for its middle managers during August. Following successful completion of the course, middle managers – Supervisor (ASYCUDA World) Juliette O’Dean, Senior Operations Supervisor Verona Paulsen, Deputy Operations Supervisor Delmarie Williams, and Deputy Administration Supervisor Junella Moulding – were awarded certificates (see photo attached).
ASYCUDA Consultant, Owen Holder, welcomed all in attendance to the course’s closing ceremony and pointed out that the objectives of the course were to expose middle managers to the critical managerial skills necessary to effectively and efficiently manage their team. He indicated that the topics covered during the course were How Organisations Work, Motivational Theory & Solutions, Team Formation & Operations, Communications, Feedback, Conflict in the Workplace, and Managing Change.
Owen said:
“Managers undertaking the course have displayed a keen level of interest in the concepts taught and have asked many relevant questions to aid their learning throughout the process.”
Furthermore, the following was stated of the highly motivated managers:
“I am happy to report that you the Managers have assured that no restraints will be employed in your endeavour to implement the new concepts learnt in your daily activities.”
The course was punctuated with team-building exercises, which resulted in creative skills being shown by participants and showcasing that managers are on the right track to achieving great teamwork initiatives.
Financial Secretary, Dax Richards, offered his personal congratulations to the four members of staff who passed the course and suggested that it provided a solid foundation for the future direction of potential senior managers in HM Customs & Excise.
Dax said:
“It is definitely a period of significant change and I hope you have already seen some of that with the introduction of ASYCUDA. We are committed and fully behind bringing Customs in line with current practices which you will carry out as modern customs officers – this will of course not come without hard work and dedication. As your employers and leaders we want to make sure that you have the correct tools and abilities to take the service forward in the future.
“I would like to thank you for your hard work, and congratulations to those who passed the course.”
Juliette O’Dean thanked Owen, Dax and Assistant Financial Secretary, Nicholas Yon, for creating the environment to conduct the training.
Juliette concluded:
“On behalf of all who attended the course, we can see from a management perspective how we can improve our management skills, which will result in providing the public with a better service.”
