EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING

The Education Committee met on Monday, 16 October 2017.

Three Advisory Teachers were introduced to the Committee:

  • Mr Jacques Krige, Maths Advisory Teacher, spoke of the current staffing challenges within the Maths Department, his role and his aspirations within Prince Andrew School
  • Mr Fraser Stone, Business & ICT Advisory Teacher, shared his initial observations and discussed the development of business and enterprise within the Prince Andrew School c He will introduce a new Enterprise & Marketing course through the St Helena Community College (SHCC) in the coming weeks and will also support ACCA training
  • Mr Stephen Coates, Science Advisory Teacher, spoke of his role and initial observations of the Science Department with an emphasis on the Marine Biology element

The Directorate’s Strategic Plan for 2018-2021 was presented to the Committee along with an overview of the priorities for 2018/19 that includes improved attainment, support and training for teachers and a balanced curriculum that recognises the rights and needs of every child.

SHCC Board members attended for the consideration of two items resulting from the Board’s recommendations.  The Education Committee approved the proposals for Entry Requirements for Higher Education Courses and the amendments to the Charging Policy to include charges for BKSB assessments and the Microsoft Imagine Academy course – both recommendations will take effect from 1 November 2017.

As there is widespread concern about the sustainability of the fishing industry on St Helena in light of low rates of entry into the industry by young people, the Committee received a report from the SHCC, which provided an update on the process of a Maritime Training proposal.

The amendment to repeal Section 63 of the Education Ordinance was presented to the Committee.  The Committee voiced their concerns and was not content with the amendment due to lack of information provided by the Social & Community Development Committee.
