EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING

WEDNESDAY, 20 MARCH 2019

The monthly meeting of the Education Committee took place on Wednesday, 20 March 2019.

In support of the ‘St Helena Connected’ initiative, the Island’s Primary Schools, under the guidance of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Business Advisor, Frazer Stone, are trialling a Computing Programme of Study to support the teaching of ICT and Computing in the primary sector. Frazer presented this programme and scheme of work to the Committee who were asked to note the programme of study as a step forward in making primary aged children ‘cable ready’. A feedback session in respect of the trial is expected to take place in September 2019 and will be followed by parental engagement workshops.

The Committee was asked to consider and approve the proposed term times and school calendar for 2019/20. The Committee agreed the term times and calendar in principle but noted that publication of these times would only take place once key dates (Whit Monday, Queens Birthday etc.) have been confirmed.

Following the success of the Environmental Conference, the Assistant Director of Schools was approached by Teacher Training Advisor, Garry Cameron, with the idea of hosting a Teaching & Learning Conference in May 2019. The aims of this conference are to:

  • Promote the benefits of education and the process of teaching and learning on St Helena to the wider community
  • Create awareness of the importance of education and learning
  • Support Strategic Objective 6 – Engagement with Stakeholders: The Education Directorate promotes a culture of parental and community engagement in which education and educators are valued

The idea of the conference was shared with and supported by the Committee. Further details will follow on this nearer the time.
