COUNCILLORS TO ATTEND 63RD COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE IN BANGLADESH

Councillors Derek Thomas and Kylie Hercules will depart St Helena on Saturday, 28 October 2017, to attend the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The week-long CPC, hosted by the Parliament of Bangladesh, will begin on 1 November 2017, with the theme ‘Continuing to enhance high standards of performance of Parliamentarians.’

Workshops and debates will be held during the conference on a wide range of topics including the role of Parliamentarians in building stronger ties within the Commonwealth, giving voice to the youth, mechanisms for ensuring effective participation of the youth in the governance process, and climate change.

Councillor Thomas said:

“Once again I look forward to representing St Helena as an Executive Committee Member at the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I trust that I will be able to make valuable contributions to the discussions and workshops, which will be of benefit to the Nation Branches.”

Councillor Hercules will participate in the Small Branches Conference as a Plenary Discussion Leader for the topic ‘the role of Parliament in meeting the challenges of protecting territorial waters.’

Councillor Thomas will return to the Island on 11 November. Councillor Hercules will stay abroad to attend the Westminster Seminar from 13-17 November at the Houses of Parliament in London.
