SAFETY ADVICE
Guy Fawkes Day will be celebrated this Sunday, 5 November 2017. The St Helena Fire Service offers the following advice to ensure safe Bonfire Night celebrations:
- When building your bonfire, choose a clear site that is no less than 18 metres away from buildings, trees, wooden fences, overhead cables or car parks – good organisation will minimise risk to people and property
- Do not use flammable liquids to help start your bonfire or burn dangerous items such as aerosol cans, paint tins, foam-furniture, batteries or tyres
- If you plan to build your bonfire before Bonfire Night, please ensure that it cannot be accessed by vandals, so as to avoid unexpected incidents on the night
- Nominate a responsible adult to light the fire or fireworks. Carefully follow instructions for lighting fireworks and always ensure they are lit at arm’s length. Stand well back and make sure fireworks face upwards and fire in an outwards direction. Don’t go back to a firework once lit – even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode
- Always keep a bucket of water, hosepipe or fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency
- Take care with sparklers and never give them to children under the age of five. Remember, sparklers will still be hot even after they’ve gone out
- Pets and fire or fireworks do not mix – keep your pets in a safe place on Bonfire Night
