Ethel Yon OBE today took the Prescribed Oaths for Sheriff of St Helena before Acting Governor Sean Burns, in the Governor’s Office at the Castle (see attached photo). Greta Pat Musk MBE JP retires from her role as Sheriff at the end of this month, with Ethel’s appointment becoming effective on 1 January 2016.
The Sheriff of St Helena is nominally responsible for enforcing Court Orders, with this being normally carried out by the Police on the Sheriff’s behalf. The Sheriff is also responsible for summoning Jurors when a Jury is required, either in the Supreme Court or for a Coroner’s Inquest.
The most conspicuous public role of the Sheriff, however, is the Swearing In of Governors and Acting Governors.
